Microsoft 365 Copilot data security

Microsoft 365 Copilot answers questions using the content each user can already open in Microsoft 365, so its data security depends on permissions, sensitivity labels and data loss prevention being right before rollout. Ghani Governance configures Microsoft Purview controls (labels, DLP, audit, retention and DSPM for AI) so Copilot, Copilot Chat and Copilot Studio agents work within your data protection rules.

What is Copilot? Microsoft Copilot vs Microsoft 365 Copilot

What is Microsoft Copilot? “Copilot” is the name Microsoft uses for several AI assistants. Microsoft Copilot (marketed as “Microsoft Copilot: your AI companion”) is the consumer and web chat experience; Microsoft Copilot AI is the general term people use for all of them. And what is Microsoft 365 Copilot? Microsoft 365 Copilot (sometimes searched as “Copilot Microsoft 365 Copilot”, “Copilot Microsoft” or “Microsoft Copilot 365”) – also written M365 Copilot, Copilot 365, 365 Copilot or Copilot for Microsoft 365 – is the paid add-on that works inside Word, Excel, Outlook and Teams and grounds its answers in your organisation’s content through Microsoft Graph. Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat (Copilot Chat) is the work chat surface (Microsoft Copilot Chat) available at no additional cost to users with a Microsoft Entra work account and an eligible Microsoft 365 subscription, without the add-on licence.

Whether staff call it MS Copilot, an AI copilot, Microsoft AI Copilot or Copilot AI chat, and whichever Copilot AI experience you use, the data question is the same: what can it read, what can it repeat, and what is recorded. That is a Microsoft Purview question, not a Copilot feature switch. Product baseline: Microsoft Purview data security and compliance protections for generative AI apps.

Copilot data security controls we configure

Oversharing review

Permissions and site sharing that would let Copilot surface content to the wrong people; DSPM for AI oversharing assessments where your tenant offers them.

Sensitivity labels

Labels and encryption that Microsoft 365 Copilot respects when it reads and generates content. See sensitivity labels.

DLP for Copilot

Data loss prevention policies that stop labelled or sensitive content being processed in Copilot responses. See Microsoft Purview DLP implementation.

Audit and retention

Copilot interactions in the audit log, retention policies for prompts and responses, and eDiscovery access. See eDiscovery.

Copilot Studio and AI agents

Microsoft Copilot Studio lets teams build Copilot agents that connect to SharePoint, Dataverse and third-party systems. AI agents extend the attack surface: each agent has a data scope, connectors and an author. AI agent security starts with knowing which agents exist, what data they can reach, and whether DLP and audit cover them. We scope Purview controls for Copilot Studio agents and for custom apps built on Azure OpenAI, using the capabilities Microsoft documents for your licence – and we say plainly when a control is still in preview.

Copilot vs ChatGPT: which is safer for business data?

The comparison people search for – Copilot vs ChatGPT – is really about where data goes. Microsoft 365 Copilot runs inside the Microsoft 365 service boundary under your existing commercial terms; ChatGPT Enterprise is a separate OpenAI service with its own contract and admin controls; consumer chatbots are different again. Neither is “safe” by default. The deciding factors are your contract, your labels and DLP, and whether you can see what users paste. Purview can apply DLP and DSPM for AI insights to some third-party AI sites in the browser; see AI data security threats.

Microsoft Security Copilot is a different product

Microsoft Security Copilot is an AI assistant for security operations teams, working across Defender, Sentinel, Entra and Purview. It is not the same as Microsoft 365 Copilot. We do not implement Security Copilot as a product; we configure the Purview data that it, and your analysts, rely on.

Is Copilot for Microsoft 365 included in my subscription?

Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat is included for eligible Microsoft 365 work accounts. The full Copilot for Microsoft 365 experience in Word, Excel, Outlook and Teams, grounded in your organisation’s data, is a paid add-on licence. Either way, the data protection work is the same: labels, DLP and permissions first.

What is a Copilot agent?

A Copilot agent is a specialised assistant, built by Microsoft, a partner or your own staff in Copilot Studio, that answers from defined knowledge sources or takes actions through connectors. Licensing for agents varies with the data and actions they use, so check Microsoft’s current terms. For data security, each agent needs an owner, a defined data scope, and audit coverage.

Microsoft Copilot questions

Does Microsoft 365 Copilot see everything in our tenant?

No. It works with content the signed-in user already has permission to access. That is why oversharing is the main risk: Copilot makes existing over-broad access easier to find.

Do sensitivity labels work with Copilot?

Yes. Microsoft documents that Copilot honours label encryption and usage rights, and that responses can inherit the label of the source content. Labels have to exist and be applied first.

Can you deploy Microsoft Copilot for us?

We prepare the data protection side – Purview, labels, DLP, audit and retention – and work alongside whoever manages licensing and adoption. We do not resell Copilot licences.
